Health care and other industries often have varying levels of demand for services. Recording data and reviewing the statistics can help predict what level of business and type of employee coverage may be needed for shifts at different times of day or at different times of year. The restaurant industry can predict the need for more staff during holidays or at peak meal hours of the day while health care needs may also increase on holidays it may be less easy to predict. Over-working staff, placing demands for long hours and little time off, can lead to health problems physically and mentally.
Burnout is a word that is used to describe the mental and physical effects of chronic overwork or other stress. Teachers and workers in other service industries in addition to the health care sector can be at risk for chronic stress. Coping skills and alertness can be negatively affected and apathy and irritable mood may also be more of a problem.
Guidance with a focus on workers in the healthcare industry is available with strategies to identify the problem, and to help improve working conditions that may lead to work burnout and help workers who are experiencing symptoms: "Implementing Optimal Team-Based Care to Reduce Clinician Burnout," (Smith, et al, 2018), National Academy of Medicine, nam edu.
